Sleep Problems

There is nothing quite like a good nights sleep! We know what it feels like to have a deeply restful sleep, and often we find that doesn’t happen. Sometimes this is a short term problem, and for some people it is a life long struggle. Sleep disorders and sleep problems have negative effects on our capacity to function in our daily lives. If chronic, then sleep problems can lead to symptoms of depression, can worsen pain conditions, and can negatively affect our overall health.

There are not many options for helping improve our sleep when it becomes unbalanced and out of it’s cycle. Sleeping pills can help, but they tend to induce a type of sleep that often isn’t restful.

Acupuncture for sleep problems involves getting to the root cause of the sleep problem. The cause of sleep problems is different for each person. For example, sleep problems for children or teenagers have different causes than sleep problems for older adults. The aim of treatment is to understand those specific causes and to remedy them.

Having Acupuncture has been shown to regulate hormones and neurotransmitters which are the chemicals in our bodies that govern and regulate many body processes, including our sleep patterns and circadian rhythm. For example in this analysis of 31 trials (2433 participants in total) on Acupuncture for sleep disturbances in peri and post menopausal women.

Diagnosis and treatment is specific to you and your particular sleep problem. For example a person that finds it hard to get to sleep will have a different treatment to someone that gets to sleep easily, but wakes up between 1am and 3am and stays awake for a while. Other factors such as age and medical history will also affect the specifics of your diagnosis and treatment.
